Governor Ted Kulongoski
"A healthy environment is essential to a livable Oregon and a strong economy. In our state, it is no longer a zero-sum game between the environment and jobs. That is a false choice. In Oregon, we know better. There is a complementary relationship between a clean environment and a robust economy -- they exist and support upon each other." [Full Speech]

Renewable Energy
At the request of the Governor a number of state agencies were asked to develop a Renewable Energy Action Plan with input from stakeholders. These agencies - Agriculture, PUC, Economic Development, Energy, Environmental Quality, Forestry and Water Resources - prepared several drafts, which were sent to interested individuals, businesses and organizations and posted on the Oregon Department of Energy Web site. Public comment and stakeholder input was taken and a series of public meetings were held before finalizing the document. The final Renewable Energy Action Plan was released in April of 2005. Willamette River
As I announced in my 2004 State of the State speech, my top environmental priority is to clean up and restore the Willamette River, from the headwaters east of Eugene to the mouth of the river as it enters the Columbia. It is a key environmental resource, providing fish and wildlife habitat. As a “working river,” the Willamette is also the lifeblood of our economy in the Valley, supporting businesses, industries and communities. Finally, the Willamette contributes to the quality of life that Oregonians enjoy and it is part of the legacy we will leave for our children. [http://governor.oregon.gov/Gov/willamette.shtml]
Oceans
Oregonians treasure the beautiful Oregon coast and the awesome Pacific Ocean, which, as much as any other part of our diverse landscape, define who we are as a people. The ocean creates a sense of place, provides us with food, supports the economy and livability of coastal communities, and provides an economic portal to the rest of the world. Our estuaries and nearshore reefs are nurseries for abundant marine life. The reality that Oregonians can enjoy public beaches, dramatic scenic headlands, and a productive marine environment, within a two-hour drive for most is not chance – it is the result of visionary Oregonians like Governors Oswald West and Bob Straub, and parks superintendent Sam Boardman, as well as countless committed citizens who made decisions with the future just as much in mind as the present. We have an obligation to carry out that legacy for the generations that follow us. [http://www.governor.oregon.gov/Gov/GNRO/oregon_sea.shtml]
Gorge Air
The Columbia River Gorge is an area of astounding beauty and diversity. It is also an area that over 70,000 residents of Oregon and Washington call home. The National Scenic Area Act of 1986 lays out a unique challenge. Namely, to protect and enhance the scenic, natural, cultural, and recreational resources of this National Scenic Area while at the same time supporting the local economies so vital to the area’s future prosperity.
