Working to Restore Oregon's Eastside Forest Ecosystems and Community Health: Oregon's Experience
A Report to Governor John Kitzhaber
The Governor's Eastside Forest Advisory Panel and its partners have made important progress in identifying common ground among diverse interests that could allow us to collectively meet the goals of restoring eastside forest ecosystems, reducing the risk of catastrophic wildfire and enhancing the economic stability of rural communities. This report highlights the importance of working collaboratively across the landscape using an agreed-upon set of guiding principles to improve the health of forests, watersheds and communities in eastern Oregon. The Panel's efforts have proven that working together with scientists, managers, communities and citizen leaders over this six year period has tremendous potential to restore forests, watersheds and communities in both the short and long term. Oregon's Forest Resource Trust
The Forest Resource Trust provides an example of how federal or state run
forestry assistance and incentive programs will help Oregon toward its goal
of sustainability by 2025 by restoring healthy, productive forests on
underproducing lands and by improving the management of these forests for a
variety of environmental, economic and social benefits. Healthy, productive
and economically viable family forestlands prevents forestland losses to
development and ensures stability in private forestland ownership for
generations to come.
